I have a new 2014 KTM 500 XCW, same issue with metal chips/flakes. I immediately called. dealer and spoke with service manager. He says this is totally normal with this particular bike and is why they say to change oil often and clean all screens including magnetic plug. Nobody's going to flack you for riding a 250. Im an X MXer and Harescreambler. Depending on the setup, the exc 500 makes a fine street bike, cruises nicely at 80/85 at low rpm. Tank mpg is really the only beef (maybe the lack of the taller seat for cushioning), its very stable at post 100 speeds if you take it there.
I am considering buying a used 350 EXC-F from a friend. We are both over 50 and the bike has never been raced. What are the real world service intervals on this bike? The KTM schedules are absurd. Assuming an average speed of 20 mph on dirt, the mfg states new oil and filter at 300 miles and valve adjustment every 600.

I used Putoline 20/50 or 20/60. I sold it with over 600 hours and 16,500 miles. Oil consumption as stated in book (about 50 ml per ride).
